Customer Reviews

My New Favorite Razor I've been wet shaving for years and I consider myself to have a good eye when it comes to double edge safety razors. I've used almost all the top rated safety razors and can say that often times razors are over hyped. They do not shave as close as they claim. I can proudly say this does NOT apply to the crusader. Hands down this is my favorite razor I have ever owned. The long handle and weight fits into my personal preference. Each side of the razor has a different groove, so you're essentially getting two razors in one. Use the groove side for a closer shave, and the smooth side for a milder shave. I tend to get cuts on my neck where the skin is sensitive, so the smoother mild side is perfect for shaving against the grain on my neck. The razor has an adjustable knob to change the aggressiveness of the blade. I give the knob a half turn to set it in the middle. My facial hair grows back rather quickly, so I need a blade that can be adjusted in order to get my desired close shave. I've had no issues with clogging when it comes to rinsing this razor. I fill up my sink with water and fully submerge the head of the razor into the water. Giving it several good shakes will knock out any excess hair and shaving cream. I feel this technique works better than a quick rinse under the faucet. Don't sleep on this razor because this might be the last one you end up buying! (yes it's that good)5It's not just a razor, it's a shaving partner. Take your time and get to know it and you'll be glad you did! This razor is truly unique, and I would have expected nothing less from Vikings. What I like most about this 'war axe' is the ability to customize my shave based on which part of my face I'm shaving and how close I want to get. The adjustable dial is fluid and gives you total control, you just need to be patient. I recommend starting with a very small blade gap the first time and then as you become more familiar with it, you can increase the aggressiveness and expose a bit more. This is sort of like driving a new car, it takes a bit of time to build rapport and get comfortable with it, but once you do it really lets you feel more in control than with any other DE razor I've used. One other bit of advice that I'd echo is to really avoid putting any pressure on it, the weight is plenty to pull the razor on its own, just let it glide and take your time. If you're patient with this razor, you can get the cleanest shave you've ever had.5Emperor Augustus Adjustable RocksFit and finish are superb on this razor and it is extremely well made. As I observed from the pictures before buying, the head, minus variations in the baseplate appear to be very close to both the Super Adjustable and Slim. The adjustment mechanism operates as the baseplate moves downward with gap increases. While different than a vintage Gillette adjustable, this one works very well also, but I noticed while playing with the adjustment, the gap can go slightly off at the max setting. Just click/pinch the baseplate up on both sides and it resets back to being perfect. If you pinch the baseplate when you adjust, the gap is perfect on all settings. I do this with my Variant as well. Springs are like that, it is not an issue at all.I think the finish is amazing. The enamel or whatever they use is tough stuff. I have 2 refinished Fatboys in Gun Kote and the finish feels similar to the touch. It could very well be ceramic based also, but VB hasn t yet shared. Regardless, it is a tough and silky finish. It appears brown in pictures but I was pleasantly surprised to see that it has some violet in it as well, like looking at a nice finish on a car in sunlight and seeing some color variations. The weight is a little more than my Variant but not by much but it is lighter than my Timeless .95 OC in stainless. It just feels very solid in construction.First shave today was terrific. I splurged and started out on it s max setting with the grain. I have a thick beard. The max setting was not needed at all. For me, this thing is just fine at 6 or 7, which I then used across the grain and I dropped it down to a 3 against the grain. Nice BBS shave in 3 passes. I could probably drop it to a 2 pass BBS after this first shave. This thing might look like my Super Adjustable and Slim up top, but the shave felt completely different. That baseplate drop really changes the feel between this and my vintage Gillettes. This razor shaves similar to my Variant. A little more room to maneuver than my Variant but they felt similar.Bottom line. This is a very efficient razor, especially at the higher settings. There was no cream nor moisture left on my face with the max setting going with the grain on the first pass. Keep in mind that a slick cream is needed for this razor at the max settings like other razors this efficient. For me and this razor, I will stick with a 6 or 7 with the grain and across the grain (I like to do both at same time) and finish against the grain with 3 in the future.Spend that 4 bucks on the Augustus. The frosted chrome looks nice, but the wow factor goes way up in this finish.5Looks nice but it isn t a good quality precise razorI have the Vikings Godfather Safety Razor, and it was my very first DE safety razor that I bought. The Godfather is a very mild (non-aggressive) razor. I can put a feather blade in there and still get a good shave. I also had the chieftain (Odin Edition) but I returned that because it was too aggressive, and it was too small for my hands. The crusader looks nice but it isn t precise at all. I use on the lowest setting due to having sensitive skin and I still get nicks. I used Voskhod blades which are known for being really smooth and great in aggressive razors and the shave was terrible. I thought it was the blades so I used persona blades which are known for having a nice balance of sharpness and smoothness. I still received a bad cut and I used very little pressure. Hair gets clogged when you use on the lowest setting and the grip isn t that good when you use slick soaps such as soap commander. The whole point of an adjustable is to be able to Easily pinpoint where you feel comfortable shaving but with this razor you have to guess. Both sides of the razor are not equivalent which is even more annoying, because one side of the blade can become more dull quicker. This razor should be priced no higher than 20$ for the quality. I will not be purchasing any more Viking products in the future. Check out the Rockwell Model T if you want quality.1Precise, Solid, Smooth! The Crusader Adjustable Safety Razor by Vikings Blade takes the traditional wet shave to the next level! This is definitely jumping into the deep end of the pool! So make sure you ve earned your Traditional Wet Shaving Bona Fides before dipping your toe in.The Crusader has two unique qualities that make it a cut above all other adjustable razors.First, it has a weight, heft and balance I ve not seen in other adjustable razors. Even the Merkur Futur is a lightweight compared to the Crusader. The Crusader is the superior razor. Unlike the Futur, the Crusader has maintained the traditional safety razor look and feel. I like that. A lot!Second, the razor head is asymmetrical. Each side gives a different shave. The sculpted comb is a bit more aggressive, while the straight comb is a bit milder. The assymmetrical razor head is a marvelous feature! If you find the sculpted comb works fine on the cheek but, perhaps, may be too aggressive for the neck, simply flip to the straight comb and you get a more mild approach. No need to stop the shave (during a pass) to adjust the settings! I used this method right off the bat and found it to be quite natural and effective. The razor head is also a bit more compact than that on the Vikings Blade Chieftain. Whereas, the Chieftain fully encloses the end tabs of the razor blade, the Crusader leaves these tabs exposed to increase overall maneuverability. The Crusader is VERY maneuverable! And, while I appreciate (and like) having the blade end tabs enclosed within the razor head, I have many new and vintage razors that opt for the exposed end tab design. It s something that is familiar to me and certainly not a dealbreaker. I understand the reasons for the change. A good decision by Vikings Blade for this razor, in my humble opinion. The adjustment collar does not have a numbering system. Other adjustable razors number the adjustment collar 1-6, etc. So, I was a bit thrown when I saw the absence of numbers. However, I ve come to understand that, even though an adjustable razor has numbers, I m really only turning the adjustment knob or from number to number in order to open or close the blade gap and vary the aggressiveness of the razor and shave. When using an adjustable razor that has numbers on the adjustment collar, I set each shaving pass to a specific number. So, for example, my first pass would be 5, my second would be 3, and the third would be 1.5. However, if I set the adjustable razor aside (to shave with another razor in my collection) and come back to it a week or two later, I ve now forgotten my numbered shave settings. Was my first pass set at 5 or 6? Was the second pass 3.5 or 4? Additionally, the shave will change a bit when a different blade is used. So, using the same numbered routine will not yield the same result as the previous shave. Different blade, different shave. With the numbers removed, I simply turn the collar or or , etc. to a level that feels right for the shave. (From full open, first pass, turn the collar , shave. Second pass, turn the collar , shave. Third pass, turn the collar , shave). And it s easier to remember this method, than trying to remember a number pattern. Not having numbers frees up the shave. I m more inclined to try new settings because I m now focused on the shave and not a number. The adjustment collar is smooth and continuous. The combinations of mild to aggressive shaves are limitless! And there s no fear of overdoing it. With the asymmetrical razor head, I can take more control of my shave. Again, if the setting is too aggressive, I simply flip the head to the straight comb side for bit milder pass. It s very much like having a two-stage adjustable razor.Wonderfully, I have yet to have a shave with the Crusader that has been too aggressive or resulted in any irritation. This includes having the razor set at it s very widest blade gap, full open. The Crusader gives me the smoothest most comfortable and close shave of any razor I own.I m rather shocked by this discovery, but also delighted. I thought the Vikings Blade Chieftain Safety Razor would never be surpassed. Only the folks at Vikings Blade could manufacture a razor to surpass their best selling Chieftain! The Crusader is the new favorite in my shaving den!A viewer on my YouTube channel, asked, If you had to pick one razor of yours, which you will have to use for the rest of your life...,which one would you choose? I deferred my answer thinking this would be a good opportunity to explain my pick in a video.Well, I now have my answer. The Crusader is the razor I would pick, hands down!Great weight and balance, precisely engineered and manufactured from premium materials, the Crusader is solidly built and a solid performer that will easily last a lifetime!Yes, The Crusader is meant for advanced wet shavers. However, my advice is this: buy the Chieftain AND the Crusader. The Chieftain is the perfect razor with which to learn how to do the traditional wet shave. After several months (or a year) of understanding the process (mastering the correct shaving technique, and learning about proper preparation, lathering, etc.), you can then graduate to the Crusader. And since you ll already own the Crusader, it ll be in the wings ready to go.The Crusader and the Chieftain are, quite possibly, the only two razors you will ever need!5Quality fit and finish. Smooth shaver. Impressive......The thing that really stands out with this razor is the heft and build quality. I was pleasantly surprised at how it felt in my hands. This is no lightweight and once in your grasp you know you have a manly tool in your possession. It came very nicely packaged and presented in its own razor box that exuded top notch quality. The color scheme is different but attractive with the Brass & Cognac finish that shows great detail and is very well done. The tto (twist to open) mechanism works as it should with no sticking with equal door separation or as some would say in the wet shaving world lazy door that can be seen and experienced with other tto razors, new or vintage. Opens right up, slip your blade in and close it right up with a couple quick turns of the dial. Holds the blade in place firmly and precisely with equal blade gap and exposure on both sides. The adjustment dial works as it should in allowing one to set the blade gap from mild to a more aggressive/efficient feeling razor. I used the complete range of adjustment from low (1) to its highest setting (9) and can honestly say that the razor shaves and cuts whiskers at any setting you place it at. The dial adjuster stays put without fear of one accidentally touching it and moving it while shaving. The tactile grip is one of the better ones I have experienced giving one assurance that even with a handful of lather running down the razor, it will not slip from your hands. I shaved with a days worth of whiskers to even 3 days worth of beard stubble and not a single issue with the razor. It delivered smooth and comfortable shaves every time. I have a few Vintage Gillette Adjustables, a Slim & Black Beauty and I can honestly say that the VB Emperor Augustus shaved just as good if not better than those established Iconic razors. If there is something that I might nitpick on is perhaps the balance of the razor. Like I stated previously, this is a big and heavy razor (which I like) but, I feel as though the handle carries most of the weight making it more bottom heavy. Not by much but, I can feel it and subsequently I grab the handle a bit more towards the bottom to allow the head and razor do most of the work. No pressure with this razor, the weight will do the work for you, trust me. Another thing is the brand marking on the TTO doors. It s just aesthetics and has nothing to do with the performance of the razor at all. I just like a plain, unmarked razor head and I feel as if this cheapens the VB Emperor which it is not. Like I said, it s just my preference as others might not even think twice about it.It s a good quality razor that can and will work for a noob to a seasoned wet shaving vet without any issues. Grab your favorite blade, open the tto doors, drop in your blade and close. Then set your gap and done, that easy. Good quality finish, excellent heft and feel with good material make up (almost all brass construction) and for a very fair price. A great value in my book.....5Not for the faint of heart...Know your limits before buying! As other reviews have stated, this is for the advanced wet shaver. Might want to stay away if you are new to wet shaving, as this razor will test your limits. The Crusader is beautifully crafted, well-balanced, strong, and an elegant design. The adjustability is outstanding to go for a more or less aggressive shave (depending on skin type, hair texture, angle, etc.) Be warned though - If you dial it up to aggressive, you will need to be patient with the shave. Work up a rich lather, take your time, and let the weight of the razor do the work - nothing more than that. Be what this razor whats you to be: a craftsman, patient, and skilled with your hands. It demands respect, but if you treat it right and understand your limitations, The Crusader will deliver a great shave for you in return.5mehThough it's a not marketing point, this razor is heavy; even heavier than my 'ultra-heavyweight' Parker razor.I love the copper finish, but that's merely aesthetics.*Another thing to note is how well this razor shaves non-face areas. When fully open to the most aggressive setting, it shaves body hair very well- better than anything else I've used (though that's not much). All shavers, from cyclists to pole dancers, should check this thing out!that said, the copper finish doesn't stay brilliant for very long.Other than non-face shaving, this razor underperforms compared to my other razors. After falling down in the tub, one of the arms that adjust the razor broke. I'm not going to replace it.2Vikings Blade did it again!!!First impression was, this is the best looking razor I've got. It has very nice weight, excellent grip, and as I thought it would, perfect blade alignment. I had been thinking of getting an adjustible razor for a while. The idea of been able to use any blade with the same razor and adjust as needed seemed like a no brainer. But still I let time pass, and I am so glad I did. This razor has a unique feature not found in any other adjustable razor. One side of the razor head is sculpted and the other is a straight bar, IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE.I shaved with it shortly after it arrived, could not wait. This is a very, and I mean very efficient razor. I don't think if you are new to wet shaving that you should try to learn using this razor. It will cut through those whiskers effortless. Now, I did not cut or nick myself. But I took my time, and I have been shaving for a minute and have my technique just right. 3 passes, with, a cross, and against. I used the vikings blade shave cream and blade (razor does not come with blades), figured to just go ahead and do a full vikings blade shave.Where the sculpted and straight bar head made a difference. .My sensitive areas in my face are; underneath my chin, mustache area, and overall neck when shaving against the grain. I used the straight bar side for those areas and it was just SMOOTH.. No irritation at all after the shave. In summary, what a razor! No Nick's, cuts, or irritation. Alum Block tested. This razor can do absolutely anything. Even though I would not recommend for new wet shavers( as to learn using this razor), because efficient can mean aggressive when your still learning. If you are new to wet shaving, you are going to want this razor because, you are going to want to try a whole bunch of blades. Not every blade will work for you, some blades just don't pair well with certain razors. But you can make any blade work well with this one razor by simply making the adjustments, and you can use the straight bar for your trouble areas. You will not regret buying this razor.5Worked well but didn t lastWorked great, wish it had lasted more than five months. The gold finish began wearing away almost immediately after the razor was put into service, exposing a mottled chrome appearance. This wasn t debilitating to its function, but during a blade change, the tiny shoulders on the fixed portion on one side of the razor fractured, leaving one side of the butterfly assembly unable to latch closed. The side that could still close was also rendered useless because the blade was no longer being bent to the proper curve. Attached image illustrates the tiny missing piece of the fixed body meant to react against the tension of the closing of the butterfly mechanism. It was fractured by the force of closing the butterfly assembly after a blade change. For reference, I was using standard Feather blades. I also noted that the Feather blades routinely developed an iron-oxide red rust where they contacted the razor, perhaps due to the dissimilarity in materials between blade and razor - this had never occurred (with the same batch of Feather blades) on my previous steel/chrome razor.1
